ACB Presents The Nutcracker Suite / American Contemporary Ballet
700 S. Flower Street, Suite 3200
Los Angeles, CA 90017, United States
When ACB expanded its 2017-18 season, it couldn’t ignore the world’s best-known holiday ballet. Nor could it give it any ordinary staging. “The Nutcracker Suite is a fantasy, but traditionally we experience that fantasy secondhand, by watching the protagonists experience it on stage,” said ACB Artistic Director Lincoln Jones. “How much more magical would it be to experience it directly, from inside the Land of the Sweets?”
Thus, the audience becomes the first act, and ACB’s Nutcracker becomes the city’s most immersive production of the holiday favorite to date. Guests will spend one dreamlike hour in an ethereal, enchanted land of dancing sweets and snowflakes 350 feet above the city, while fantastical versions of familiar characters surprise and delight throughout the festivities.
Traditionalists needn’t fear – the second act’s sugarplums and dewdrops will dance their beloved roles with lively new choreography by Jones. “Our production is immersive, so it needed new choreography. For one thing, the dancers can enter the stage from more places than just the conventional side approaches. Also, I’m much more fascinated by the original E.T.A. Hoffman tale than the Alexandre Dumas revision that is used for most productions. I wanted to bring some of those original themes more to the fore.” While avoiding balletic spoilers, Jones reminds fans of holiday fantasy that in a magical story, anything can happen.
The performance is danced to some of the most beautiful music in the world, played by musicians seated directly behind the audience. Just feet in front, ballerinas bring the Nutcracker’s whimsical cast of characters to life. Afterwards, guests can join the Sugar Plum fairy and her cohorts from the Land of Sweets for hot cocoa and memorable holiday moments with family and friends.
