The insider’s view of Downtown’s culture, food, drinks, and the people who shape it.

Uncle John's Cafe

Uncle John's Cafe

Uncle John’s Cafe serves a plate full of WTF. This Chinese-American diner proudly concocts righteous combinations like pancakes + chowmein, scrambled eggs + fried chicken wings, or whatever you crave in a hangover fever dream. This is a Downtown original, formerly taking space in today’s Ham and Eggs Tavern over 40 years ago, hence it’s name and mystifying decor. Today, it can be found at the Stillwell Hotel on Grand and 9th. Customers who dine at Uncle John’s arrive with a purpose; to suppress hunger for at least 5-7 hours and to challenge cholesterol levels teetering on the brink of a migraine. Choose from a menu that’s divided by American breakfast and Chinese dishes, or select a combination that marries the two in the holiest of matrimonies. For under 10 bucks you can get a plate big enough to share and a food coma worth telling about.
